RSS Functionality available on CIAP Resources
Many electronic journals, databases and websites now provide RSS feeds which automatically notify you and distribute new content. RSS feeds can enable the delivery of the latest articles based on your search parameters and new content of a journal that you wish to know about automatically.
Many CIAP resources now offer RSS feeds.
What is RSS?
RSS stands for ‘Really Simple Syndication’ and is a XML (eXtensible Markup Language) file format for delivering regularly changing web content.
Subscribing to RSS feeds allows you to receive updated information from multiple web sites and display them in one location. You save time by not needing to check back with the website.

How do I read a RSS feed?
In order to read a RSS file, a feed reader or aggregator is needed. There are over 2,000 feed reading applications available with a variety of functions and advantages. Feed readers can be browser-based or desktop applications.
When using a browser-based feed reader, you may need to set up an online account which will allow you to access your feeds from any location with internet access. Alternatively, you can install a plug-in which will configure an individual browser at a specific workstation. Some browser-based feed readers include:
- FireFox (via ‘LiveBookmarks’ feature)
- Internet Explorer 7 has a built in RSS reader
- Google Reader
- My Yahoo
- Bloglines
You can also download an RSS reader program. NB: There may be local firewall configurations which prevent the use of RSS feeds and installation of an RSS reader program.
Further information about RSS can be found on Wikipedia.
