Welcome to the March 2008 edition of the CIAP Newsletter

busy with the release of the OvidSP interface, the commencement of the Sydney University
research project on the practice of Evidence-based Medicine (EBM) and the use of CIAP
by PG Year 1and PG Year 2 graduates. Read more about this later.
This month’s newsletter also includes details of titles generously made available in
2008 with the support of Cancer Institute NSW, an update on Quality & Safety
activities including the Open Disclosure training program, Safety Alerts which are now
available on CIAP and a reminder about journals provided by the Quality & Safety
Branch.

Books
Cancer Istitute NSW have also produced a promotional flyer listing all their
resources which would be a valuable quick reference for staff involved in the treatment of cancer. We
recommend that it be printed and placed in an area available for regular viewing by staff.

Evidence-based Medicine (EBM) Study for PGY1 and PGY2s
A new study implemented using access to
CIAP to investigate how prevocational doctors in NSW practice Evidence-Based
Medicine (EBM) in their first and second postgraduate years (PGY1 and 2). The
University of Sydney’s Faculty of Medicine is undertaking a year-long study that
started in January 2008.
Based in Sydney and Dubbo, the project
will explore how interns practice EBM, determine what influences their practice of
EBM and identify future training needs. Project findings will inform a critical
understanding of the important factors that improve or hinder the practice of EBM
by interns in relation to patient care.
Recruitment for PGY1 has closed but if
you are a PGY2 prevocational doctor and are interested in finding out more about
this study please visit the Evidence
Based Medicine Research page on CIAP.
Recruitment for PGY2s will close on the 21st March 2008.
OvidSP – New Functionality
The migration to OvidSP went well and by
now we expect that everyone will be an expert. If not, the
CIAP Education Schedule
has a list of the training sessions available.
RSS feeds
New functionality includes RSS feeds which can be
set up for automatic, regular delivery of content from:
- MEDLINE
- CINAHL
- PsycINFO
- EBM databases
- Ovid Full text journals
RSS alerts are sent on the update of the
database content. You can use RSS feeds to have new search results and newly published
articles delivered to you automatically.
For more information see our web page
RSS
Functionality available on CIAP Resources.
Expanded lexicon
Another feature of OvidSP is its ability
to use a proprietary medical lexicon to expand validated terms. This lexicon is
drawn from the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) Meta-thesaurus, medical
dictionaries and thesauri, medical acronyms, drug and disease names and standard
American and British English dictionaries.
Validated terms include:
- Word variations
- Strong synonyms (such as alternate names of drugs or diseases)
- Acronyms
- Alternative spellings (such as those that occur between British English
and American English)

Quality & Safety Branch - Open Disclosure Training and Education
Open disclosure is a frank discussion with
a patient and their support person about a patient-related incident that may have
resulted in harm or injury to the patient.
The Open Disclosure Training and Education site provides useful
presentation modules on open disclosure which are ideal for group training and as
part of orientation sessions for new starters. Each presentation comes with a
Facilitator’s Manual.
No time for a group session? The web page
also has a link to the Online Learning Centre where you will find one interactive
module for frontline clinical staff and four for clinical managers that you can do
in your own time. All modules include quizzes and an evaluation form for your feedback.
Quality & Safety Branch – Journals available via CIAP
Please don’t forget that Quality and Safety
Branch also subscribes to a number of excellent journals which are available on CIAP
including:
New CIAP Resources and Changes

2008 Edition of the Australian Medicine Handbook
The 2008 version of the
Australian Medicine Handbook (AMH) is now available. You will find
the link to this book on the left hand side menu under ‘Other Drug Resources’.
The purpose of the AMH is two-fold: firstly,
to provide a readily accessible, concise, up-to-date source of independent drug
information to facilitate effective, rational, safe and economical prescribing and
dispensing; secondly, to provide an educational tool for practitioners and students.
The AMH is totally Australian and its
contents reflect contemporary Australian clinical practice.
