Evidence-based Medicine (EBM) Study for PGY1 and PGY2s

Evidence Based Medicine Rersearch Project

A new study implemented using access to CIAP to investigate how prevocational doctors in NSW practice Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) in their first and second postgraduate years (PGY1 and 2). The University of Sydney’s Faculty of Medicine is undertaking a year-long study that started in January 2008.

Based in Sydney and Dubbo, the project will explore how interns practice EBM, determine what influences their practice of EBM and identify future training needs. Project findings will inform a critical understanding of the important factors that improve or hinder the practice of EBM by interns in relation to patient care.

Recruitment for PGY1 has closed but if you are a PGY2 prevocational doctor and are interested in finding out more about this study please visit the Evidence Based Medicine Research page on CIAP.

Recruitment for PGY2s will close on the 21st March 2008.

OvidSP – New Functionality

The migration to OvidSP went well and by now we expect that everyone will be an expert. If not, the CIAP Education Schedule has a list of the training sessions available.

RSS feeds

New functionality includes RSS feeds which can be set up for automatic, regular delivery of content from:

  • MEDLINE
  • CINAHL
  • PsycINFO
  • EBM databases
  • Ovid Full text journals

RSS alerts are sent on the update of the database content. You can use RSS feeds to have new search results and newly published articles delivered to you automatically.

For more information see our web page RSS Functionality available on CIAP Resources.

Expanded lexicon

Another feature of OvidSP is its ability to use a proprietary medical lexicon to expand validated terms. This lexicon is drawn from the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) Meta-thesaurus, medical dictionaries and thesauri, medical acronyms, drug and disease names and standard American and British English dictionaries.

Validated terms include:

  • Word variations
  • Strong synonyms (such as alternate names of drugs or diseases)
  • Acronyms
  • Alternative spellings (such as those that occur between British English and American English)

‘The art and science of asking questions is the source of all knowledge.’
