Rural Renal Resource Packages

Rural Renal Nursing Clinical Skills Package

The Rural Renal Nursing Clinical Skills Package aims to provide nurses starting work in rural renal services (novice to intermediate skill level) with a learning framework to develop the skills they may need to care for renal patients in the general wards and renal patients undergoing renal dialysis in centre based, home based (outreach) and satellite settings.

Skills package for nurses starting work in renal services

The Skills Package outlines nine clinical areas relating to renal nursing. In each clinical area, a number of Clinical Skills are identified with key knowledge/skills required, suggestions on how they might be assessed and relevant learning resources. The Package can be used across Areas, providing a record of clinical skills already achieved and allowing renal nurses to continue to develop their skills as they move between units.

General Orientation Package including information targeting allied health professionals who work in, or provide services to, renal units or patients

The NSW Rural Renal Orientation Package provides general introductory information about kidney function, kidney disease and treatment for clinicians who have not previously worked with renal patients. Specific information is included for a number of allied health professions involved in the care of renal patients. A key target group for the Package is allied health staff with no previous experience with renal patients including aboriginal health workers/educators, dietitians, social workers, occupational therapists, pharmacists and physiotherapists.

Copies of the Package were provided to all renal units in rural NSW and Area Directors of Nursing and Allied Health. Copies of the manuals and CDROMS (without textbooks) were also provided to metropolitan units.
