Catherine Sharp

Catherine Sharp RN, RSCN (UK), IC (cert), DipPsych&Couns (ACAP), GradDipClinNsg (Syd), MClinN (Syd), HonAss (Syd)

aka Kate Sharp, Founding Member, Inaugural Life Member, Immediate Past President, Wound Care Association NSW, Founder and CEO The Wound Centre, Sydney

Kate was born in a castle in Scotland and trained as a nurse in the UK in the 1960s qualifying in General & Paediatric Nursing before migrating to Australia. She embarked on a two-year working holiday around Australia beginning in Tasmania then travelling from West to East and up to the Barrier Reef before settling in Sydney.

Kate has worked in many Sydney Hospitals: Prince Henry, St Vincent's, Sutherland, Canterbury and Royal Prince Alfred. In June 2005, she was appointed as Wound Care Consultant at St George Hospital, a newly created position.

Whilst working at Sutherland Hospital in the late 1980s, Kate began to take an avid interest in wound care. She was co-ordinator of a trial on the efficacy of Hydrocolloids for Emergency Department Outpatient use. Kate's passion for wound care has seen her develop:

  • An inaugural three-day wound care course for Southern Sydney Area Health Service
  • The inaugural wound care course for the NSW College of Nursing
  • An inaugural five-day wound care course for Central Sydney Area Health Service

She is a published author, international speaker, and casual lecturer at the University of Sydney and University of Technology, Sydney.

Over many years on the executive committee, Kate held positions as secretary, newsletter editor and president. She was on the organising committee for the inaugural Australian Wound Management Associations' National Conference (hosted by NSW) held at Darling Harbour in February 1996. Kate's commitment to advancing wound care knowledge through her past and continued endeavours is unquestionable and worthy of her appointment as Inaugural Life Member at the Wound Care Association's Conference at the Novotel, Brighton Le Sands on 14 November 1997.
