Dr Philip Sharp

Dr Philip Sharp Philip's involvement with wound care extends over the last three decades. He graduated in medicine from the University of Sydney in 1972 and obtained his Fellowship in Surgery in 1980. He has recently been awarded a Fellowship of the Australian College of Biomedical Scientists.

In the 1970s, he was involved in trials using "Debrisan" in wounds, foam inserts for pilonidal sinuses and wrote a paper on gas gangrene and necrotising fasciitis, including fournier's gangrene.

By 1985, he had stopped using hypochlorite solutions and began using alginates in wounds.

During the 1990s, he rekindled his interest in diabetic foot problems in an attempt to improve limb salvage in this clinically difficult treatment area.

Philip has a particular interest in the medico-legal problems concerning wounds, patients and those treating people with wounds.

He has been a member of the Wound Care Association of NSW Inc. since the early 1990s and has been an Executive Member most of this time as a General Member, Vice President and Secretary.

Philip has lectured on many aspects of wound care at hospitals and state and national conferences. He has been the scientific convenor of the past two WCANSW annual, scientific conferences, the scientific congress of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in Sydney in 1998 and this year's General Surgeons of Australia's scientific conference in Sydney. This has helped to focus surgeons' attention on an essential part of their craft - wounds!

Philip plans to enrol in post-graduate work in medical jurisprudence and a Master in Legal Medicine to aid his interest in forensic medicine. This will help in his duties as a Police Medical Officer and as the Prison Surgeon.
