May 2009
As you are aware, we have recently changed the CIAP passwords. Thank you for your assistance in this process.
We have received considerable interest from non-NSW Public Health employees for the new passwords, which demonstrates that there was significant unauthorised CIAP access occurring. Unfortunately, we are aware that some of the new passwords have already been provided to non-NSW Public Health employees, such as pharmaceutical companies, General Practice organisations, and other unauthorised groups. This has resulted in a number of passwords being changed again.
The contractual obligations for access to CIAP extend only to NSW Public Health employees. This has always been the case and usage is now being closely monitored for breaches. Unauthorised usage significantly impacts on the cost of the CIAP subscription and this is not in the interest of the Area Health Services and other NSW Health organisations that incur the cost of this service.
Please do not provide the passwords over the phone unless you definitely know that the individual works for NSW Public Health.
In such cases, refer the individual to this page and ask them to select the HSS intranet site, which lists all facility passwords. It is located at the first dot point above:
- visit Health Support Services Intranet. Access this site from any NSW Health facility.
If you are unsure of whether an individual is entitled to access CIAP, please refer to the CIAP password list (available on the HSS intranet) or contact the CIAP helpdesk for advice. We are more than happy to help.

The purpose of the AMH is two-fold: firstly, to provide a readily accessible, concise, up-to-date source of independent drug information to facilitate effective, rational, safe and economical prescribing and dispensing; secondly, to provide an educational tool for practitioners and students.
The AMH is totally Australian and its contents reflect contemporary Australian clinical practice.
What platforms does it run on?
- Pocket PC - 2002, 2003, Windows Mobile 5.0
- Palm - Tungsten and the Treo (when running PalmOS). Australian Medicine Handbook do not recommend the Palm Z22 as they found it to be unreliable while syncing and do not think the screen quality is sufficient.
What are the differences between the Windows and Palm versions of pAMH?
There are some minor features that are not included in the Palm version. These are:
- The ability to add a note to a document
- An outline view of the document
There are also some differences to the layout to better suit the Palm platform. If you have any questions regarding the PDA version of Australian Medicine Handbook please .

CIAP has placed a link to the Electronic Medical Record (eMR) under ‘Quick Links’. This is a major information management and technology program that is being implemented to support improvements in clinical redesign and care delivery.
The initial rollout includes an emergency department module; clinic scheduling; order management for the electronic ordering and provision of results for pathology and medical imaging investigations; consultation orders for medical, nursing and allied health consults; an operating theatre module; and electronic discharge summaries.
The eMR website (Intranet only) provides details on initial components of the Electronic Medical Record, the benefits, the development of the standard build of the system and content, implementation plans, current progress and newsletters and links to other sites. As implementation progresses, common project materials including communication materials and collaborative workspaces will be made available to support project implementation locally

Group training for frontline staff
Open Disclosure Training and Education provides useful presentations for modules for Open Disclosure which are ideal for group training and as part of orientation sessions for new starters. Each presentation comes with a Facilitator’s Manual.
Facilitators can select the 45-minute or the 10-minute presentation for frontline clinical staff (interns, residents, nurses, allied health workers), or the 15-minute presentation for corporate services staff (wards persons, hospitality and catering staff, transport officers, receptionists). Have a look, also, at the Open Disclosure Case Studies for real-life situations. These can be used in any session as a focus for discussion.
Online training for managers
No time for a group session? The web page also has a link to the Online Learning Centre where you will find one interactive module for frontline clinical staff and four for clinical managers that you can do in your own time. All modules include quizzes and an evaluation form for your feedback.

From 2nd February ‘Ovid Syntax’ was renamed ‘Advanced Ovid Search’. Unfortunately this occurred after the launch of OvidSP on CIAP last Friday.
Ovid had requests for changes to the OvidSP platform globally and one of the most popular enhancements was the renaming of the ‘Ovid Syntax’ tab to ‘Advanced Ovid Search’. In response, they have decided to change this heading. We apologise if this has caused any confusion.
